Fotheringhay Gin

Going on sale 1st December to help and support the Fotheringhay Church, a limited edition and entirely hand-crafted gin is currently being distilled. This special gin is set to have a ‘plantagenet flavour’ and will contain a variety of different botanicals, each designed to recall links between both King Richard III and the Northampton village.

The limited edition gin is being created within the well renowned Warner Edwards distillery in Northamptonshire. As such, it will be a premium gin that is flavoured with herbs and flowers that even King Richard’s Plantagenet would favour.

These will include locally sourced linden blossom, the White Rose of York and quince, as served at the wedding of King Richard III. The fact that each of these will be sourced from local residents, with a slight touch of incense that reflects Fotheringhay church, the Fotheringhay Gin is set to be truly special.

A Historical Reference

One key aspect that has gone into the thought behind Fotheringhay Gin is the ties that the village and church have to King Richard’s family. The Church of St Mary and All Saints, located within Fotheringhay village, is the final resting place of King Richard’s parents, keeping the village connected to his family for all time.

As such, the distillers at Warner Edwards have taken care to ensure that the Fotheringhay Gin will offer the highest quality taste as an ode to King Richard III and his family.

Aid For Fotheringhay Church

At present, the Church in Fotheringhay is undergoing extensive repairs. Having originally been constructed in the 15th century, it uses the English perpendicular design and features a truly iconic octagonal bell tower. However, over the centuries, the Church has seen its fair share of wear and tear.

In regards to this, Tim Stimpson, the Chairman of the Friends of Fotheringhay Church, has said the following;

“The church needs a source of income to maintain its stonework and windows, and all profits from sales of the gin will be used to help preserve the church. This venture provides a link with medieval historic monastic hospitality and celebrates the Plantagenet kings who made their home here and built our church.”

Thus, through the sale of this highly limited edition Fotheringhay Gin, the Fotheringhay Church is set to be repaired and able to continue standing majestically over the village.
