Quite apart from being a magnificent venue in which to worship and celebrate special lifetime occasions, such as weddings and the renewal of marriage vows, in a typical year The Church of Saint Mary the Virgin and All Saints, Fotheringhay, plays host to a broad repertoire of events, ranging from tours and talks, with tea and cake, to concerts and recitals, often featuring performers of international renown.
The Easy Sunday Music programme affords an opportunity to enjoy talented musicians of all genres performing free of admission charges on a Sunday afternoon in the acoustically excellent nave of the church.
Throughout a typical year, and in addition to the Easy Sunday Music performances, a programme of evening events is organised, providing an opportunity for audiences to enjoy a range of musical styles, instrumental and choral, classical and modern, serious and popular, in the grand setting of this, once royal, church.
Visiting orchestras, musical and choral ensembles ensure that a very varied programme is presented in this delightful setting, often as part of their nationwide tours.
The acoustics of the church are such that it is a venue much sought after by recording artists, musicians and choirs eager to utilise its special sound qualities and Plantagenet atmosphere.
The implications of Covid 19 for performance events in the church throughout the year 2020 have resulted in the cancellation of the complete programme of Easy Sunday Music, evening entertainments, talks and guided tours.
It is hoped that a new programme will be presented in 2021.
The good news is that Church services have recently resumed, subject to the restrictions and regulations required in order to be Covid 19 compliant.
